N. K'taka beats the heat to record 70% turn-out

Bengaluru: The Election Commission (EC) disclosed that the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies of Karnataka that went to polls on Tuesday registered a voter turnout of 70.41 per cent.

However, the EC warned the votes were being still tallied and this represented a “tentative” picture.

Voters in the northern half of the state namely Chikkodi, Belagavi, Bagalkote, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Bidar, Koppal, Ballari, Haveri, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Davangere and Shivamogga cast their ballot on the day.

In 2019, the very same seats had recorded a voter turn-out of 68.43 per cent. Chikkodi topped the list with 76.99 per cent of the voters turning up.

Haveri came in second with 76.78 per cent of electors casting their ballot. Davangere was third, recording a turn-out of 76.23 per cent. Shivamogga came in fourth with 76.05 per cent.

Meanwhile, Kalaburagi recorded the worst turnout at 61.73 per cent.Bidar was the second worst at 63.55 per cent.

Raichur at 64.10 per cent and Vijayapura at 64.71 per cent were the third and fourth worst in this regard.

Compared to this, a cumulative voting percentage of 69.23 per cent was registered in the 14 constituencies in the southern part of Karnataka compared to 68.96 per cent in 2019.

Polling was held for these seats on April 26. Bengaluru Central, North and South had recorded anywhere between 52.8 per cent to 54.76 per cent voter turn-out. Bengaluru Rural managed 67.29 per cent.

As many as 227 candidates, including 206 men and 21 women contested in the 14 seats that went to polls where more than 2.59 crore voters were eligible in 28,269 polling stations.

Davangere fielded 30 candidates, the highest of the 14 followed by 23 in Shivamogga while Raichur has eight, the least.
