Bengaluru: Frustrated by his wife’s deteriorating health, an elderly man allegedly killed her after throwing her into a water sump of an apartment near Talaghattapura in the city. The body was taken out, and the deceased was identified as Shivamma, 50.

The accused, Shankarappa, 60, is absconding, sources from the police said. As per sources, Shankarappa was working at an under-construction apartment near Turahalli 80 Feet Road and had been staying at the same compound with the permission of the owner.

His wife, Shivamma, was suffering from paralysis and had been bedridden for a couple of years due to which the accused had been frustrated and allegedly wanted to get rid of her. On Sunday, when his daughter and son had gone out for work around 2 p.m., the accused allegedly dragged Shivamma out of his house, threw her into the sump, which was full of water, and closed the lid.

Later, when the son returned and inquired about his mother, the accused denied knowing about her and went out of the house. The accused did not return after that, police said. The murder came to light when Shankarappa’s son lifted the sump lid and was horrified to find his mother’s body inside.

A case has been registered at the Talaghattapura police station, and the body has been shifted to Kempegowda hospital. Further investigation is underway.
