Bengaluru: Citizens have raised objections over the cutting of trees by the road infrastructure department of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), without taking notice of the forest department, in Hosakerehalli lake near Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
Old trees that have been there for many years have been cut down by the BBMP, and local residents claim that the zonal chief engineers are not aware of the happenings. Despite inquiring into the matter and objecting to the axing of trees, the municipal body has not paid heed to the concerns of the locals and has continued its mission.
BBMP is carrying out the work of widening the existing road surrounding Hoskere lake. Locals have been raising complaints over the issue since November 22, with the forest department, but have not received a concerned reply.
Locals are outraged that till now tens of trees have been felled by BBMP officials without obtaining permission from the forest department. They also allege that no opportunity was provided to voice any kind of suggestions or objections regarding the felling of trees.
The civic body has also not provided an explanation as to how they are going to alternatively restore the ecosystem that is being lost due to the axing. After severe outrage, the project has now been put on hold.
However, “The road infrastructure department is continuing the road widening work. Cutting trees without permission is not allowed. Thus, the engineers have obtained permission and assistant engineers will be inquired about this once,” Arif, the executive engineer of the Road Infrastructure Department said.
On the other hand, Sarina Sikkaligar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, said, “It came to our attention only after the public complained that trees are being cut for road widening. Our staff has been instructed to conduct an inspection near the Hosakerehalli lake vicinity. If trees are cut without permission or without considering objections, the law will be against them and action will be taken.”
