Bengaluru: Bengaluru Traffic Police has implemented an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) at 50 crucial junctions in the city for contactless and automatic enforcement of traffic violations. Traffic violations will then be captured through high-end cameras at these junctions, the cops said.

According to them, the ITMS has the ability to track traffic violations entirely without any assistance from the police. The statement released by the police department said, “Traffic violations are captured through 250 ANPR cameras installed in 50 important junctions. The automated system generates a notice and sends the challan to the violator via SMS.”

The system has the capacity to detect multiple traffic violations, such as overspeeding, red light, stop lane, and no helmet violations. It also has the ability to detect triple riding, drivers using a mobile phone while driving and those driving without a seatbelt.

While residents of the city have seen the move as a pathway to collect more fines, Police Commissioner Pratap Reddy has clarified that the decision was taken to enhance the traffic discipline within the city. He tweeted, “Launching Soon, the ITMS of @BlrCityPolice @ blrcitytraffic at 50 junctions.

Make no mistake, the objective is NOT to collect fines. It is contactless, AI enabled & 24x7. Aim is to enhance better road behavior & compliance.” In the month of July, the Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Praveen Sood had said that no vehicle could be stopped by the cops for regular checking, unless and until a traffic violation was spotted. The move was made after many complained over alleged harassment by traffic cops in the name of document checking
