Bengaluru: The ‘Adult Literacy Programme for Karnataka’ was officially launched on Tuesday by Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot.

The Federation of Karnataka Government Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), in conjunction with the Rotary India Literacy Mission (RILM) and Private Schools and Children Welfare Association (PSCWA), have developed the programme with an aim to promote primary education and literacy.

The government has launched the initiative in an effort to support adult education, so as to give access to educational opportunities for adults who may have missed out on the traditional opportunities or those who have outgrown it but still feel the need to learn the equivalent of primary education, skill development and further education.

Thawar Chand Gehlot said, “Instead of teaching them everything you know and preventing them from learning, the goal of adult education must be to assist them in learning.” By 2027, the Rotary India Literacy Mission (RILM) hopes to witness five crore adults as literates.

This is in line with the Indian government's Nav Bharat Shiksha Karyakram, which outlines plans to literate five crore adults by 2027. In order to accomplish this, the RILM is employing a two-pronged strategy, and it has welcomed all Indians, particularly children in grades VI and beyond, to participate in the programme.
