NGO holds mass wedding

Bengaluru: Humane Touch Trust, a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) funded and conducted a mass wedding of eight Muslim couples in Bengaluru on Monday. The Nikah was performed at Masjid-e-Nur at Dickenson Road.

The secretary of Humane Touch Trust, Tazaiyun Oomer said that the financial stress that weddings put on the working class Muslim families who want to get their daughters married was immense. Therefore the NGO sought to lend a helping hand.

“There are a lot of issues in our society. One major issue is that of getting one’s daughter married. Since there is a demand for dowry in society, getting poor girls married becomes difficult. So a lot of these girls remain unmarried. We work at the grassroots level, especially in Goripalya and DG Halli. We saw that girls in this area had hit 30, yet remained unmarried,” she informed.

“They set up meetings but it doesn’t get far because the issue of dowry gets in the way. This is why we organised this mass wedding,” Tazaiyun concluded.
