Sensor-based signals to regulate city traffic after court nod

NT Correspondent

Bengaluru: Considering the fact that ambulances often find it difficult to reach hospitals on time to save lives of patients they are ferrying due to traffic jams in the city, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) is now working on a technology that will ease the movement of these life-saving vehicles on the city roads. Bengaluru Special Commissioner for Traffic, Dr MA Saleem, on Monday said that the BTP has decided to make enhanced arrangements for emergency vehicles, so they will not get stuck in traffic signals.

The BTP had earlier proposed sensor-based traffic signals that would automatically identify emergency vehicles and give way without stopping them. As per the BTP, the court has now granted permission to adopt and install the sensor-based technology in the city.

As per the special commissioner for traffic, sensor-based adaptive traffic signals will be installed in about 160 areas with high traffic jam occurrences. A special emergency response service will be set up to monitor these sensor-based traffic signals and also to keep track of movements of emergency vehicles.

The idea of adapting the advanced technology to solve the city’s traffic issues has attracted huge appreciation from its residents as well as emergency service providers in the high traffic density city that Bengaluru is.
