Bengaluru: A mentally ill person who had allegedly entered the women’s toilet in the Vijaya College premises recently, has been arrested, Jayanagar police told News Trail on Monday.

The accused has been identified by the police as Ajay Kumar, 42, a resident of Hanumanth Nagar here. The incident reportedly took place on January 10 when one of the female students, who went to the toilet on the fourth floor of the college building, was shocked to find an unidentified male person inside.

As she tried to raise an alarm, the person allegedly shut her mouth, pushed her and fled from the spot after bolting the toilet door from outside. Alerted by the commotion some students tried to catch the miscreant, but in vain. He is said to have made good his escape from the premises after pushing another girl student on the stairway he took. The girl reportedly sustained minor injuries when she fell down.

The incident left the female student shocked and embarrassed, so they did not bring the matter to the authorities. It was only after her friends persuaded that the girl who spotted the man in the toilet spoke up, breaking the news to the management. The next day, the students gathered in large numbers to protest against what they accused were “security lapses in the college”.

They called off the protest only after the management assured them that it would strengthen the security system inside the college campus. The students, in the meanwhile, lodged a formal complaint at the Jayanagar Police Station regarding the matter. Sources from the police said that the accused was caught after the police scanned CCTV footage.

“The accused was identified and a team of officers tracked and nabbed him from his residence in the city,” an officer from the police station said. Sources also added that the accused is mentally ill and during the interrogation, he was talking about releasing a Kannada movie soon.

“He said that he has the habit of going to the toilet soon after eating and that day he had entered the women’s toilet by mistake. When the female student came inside, he got scared and tried to restrain her from screaming before fleeing,” a police officer added. The accused was produced before the 37th ACMM Court, which remanded him in judicial custody
