Mysuru: In a tragic incident, a female elephant was mowed down by a speeding truck inside Bandipur National Park on the Mysuru-Kerala Highway on Tuesday night. According to information reaching here, the incident occurred at Kondaiyanapala curve near Iron Bridge in Maddur Range of Bandipur Tiger Reserve.
A truck with a Tamil Nadu registration number hit the elephant which was crossing the highway killing the animal on the spot. The truck was coming from Kerala towards Gundlupet in Chamarajanagar district. On receiving information, the Forest Department officials came to the spot for the spot mahazar. The jumbo was aged around 20 years.
Bandipur Conservator of Forests Dr. P. Ramesh Kumar and ACF G.Ravindra, RFO M.B.Mallesh visited the spot. Truck driver Ayyaswamy and Cleaner Anandkumar were taken into custody. They were arrested, produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
The veterinarian, Dr Wasim Mirza conducted the postmortem on the spot and later the body was shifted inside the forest with the help of a crane. A case has been registered against the duo under the Karnataka Wildlife Conservation Act, 1972. Meanwhile,a female elephant was electrocuted in BRT Tiger Reserve area on Tuesday.
Prabhakar, a far mer who owns a piece of land at Gundimaala in Bailur Wildlife Range had put up the electric fence to protect crops. On Tuesday, a herd of elephants tried to enter the field to eat the maize. In the process, one jumbo was electrocuted.
The other elephants fled the scene. After coming to know about the incident, Forest Department personnel came to the spot for the inspection and filed a case against the farmer at Hanur Police Station. The carcass was disposed off after performing the postmortem on the spot.
