Over and out for Barcelona!

Five-time European champions crash out of CL group-stage for the irst time since 2000

Barca have not been absent from the last 16 since 2003-04, when they did not qualify for the competition at all. This exit continues a miserable campaign for the Spanish giants after fi nancial issues forced them to let club legend Lionel Messi leave on a free transfer and then join Paris St-Germain in the summer.

Barca needed to match Benfi ca’s result to advance, but the Portuguese side won 2-0 at home to Dynamo Kyiv, leaving Xavi’s men third and facing a Europa League knockout round play-off.

Barcelona had chances to take the lead when it was goalless but Jordi Alba, who later went off with a hamstring injury, had a shot saved by Manuel Neuer and Ousmane Dembele also wasted a chance by fi ring over.

Iqbal becomes first British South Asian in Man U

Zidane Iqbal has become the fi rst British South Asian footballer in Manchester United’s history after coming off the bench in the Champions League game against Young Boys. A second-string Manchester United drew 1-1 with Switzerland’s Young Boys in Champions League Group F at Old Trafford. The Manchester-born midfielder, who has Pakistani and Iraqi heritage, became the first British South Asian to pen pro terms at Old Trafford, in April, and is now the first footballer from the community to play for the club. United were already assured of top spot in the group and a place in the last 16 while Young Boys finish bottom and are eliminated. Manchester United featured five other teenagers (Shola Shoretire, Amad Diallo, Anthony Elanga, Teden Mengi and Charlie Savage).

Chelsea funk continue

Magomed Ozdoev’s stoppagetime thunderbolt consigned a patched-up Chelsea to a 3-3 draw at Zenit St Petersburg and second place in Champions League Group H. Timo Werner thought he had settled the argument with a smart, late second goal in the closing stages, only for Ozdoev to lash home a halfvolley from the edge of the area at the death.

There’s no stopping Juve

Juventus’ 1-0 win over Malmo secured top spot for the Italians, leaving defending champions Chelsea sweating on a potentially-tougher draw in the last-16 knockout stage. Werner laid on a tap-in for fit-again Romelu Lukaku in an industrious night in Russia, but Thomas Tuchel’s men were unable to shake off a host of injury issues on their travels.

Lille seal top spot in style

Lille reached the knockout stage of the Champions League for the second time when they claimed an emphatic 3-1 win at Wolfsburg and top spot in Group G.The French champions needed a draw to advance but they played with ambition to end up with 11 points from six games, one ahead of Red Bull Salzburg with goals by Burak Yilmaz, Jonathan David and Angel Gomes. Wolfsburg, who scored a consolation goal through Renato Steffen, finished bottom of the group on fi ve points and are eliminated from all European competitions.
