‘Church Street not the art sale hotspot it was’
"Like every other artist, I took a one- way ticket from my parent's home in search of art projects."
Bengaluru: In search of new inspirations and ventures, many artists are known to leave their homes to fend for themselves until reality paves a separate stream. The story of Ishaan D'vita, who now sells art on the artsy streets of Church Street is somewhat similar. They have earned close to Rs 8,000 in a single day for a sketch. However this practice was threatened, rather fractured under the new government.
“Just like every other artist, I took a one way ticket , moved from my parents home in search of art projects. I had the option of staying with my partner or my parents until I figured out the next mode of action. One thing led to another and here we are.” Ishaan shares that from here a new chapter of his art career began, hopeful and inspired to make a living on his own terms. Ishaan was inspired by his friend Vee, and started helping them out.
Until one night a "why not me" striked. He went over to their place and scanned his old sketches. He borrowed Rs 500 rupees from them and got a bunch printed. There began a new journey. Of finding themself while people take a minute to sit down with them and forget the boundaries inflicted by the society.
"Do you want a hug?" They ask almost everyone who stops by. Ishaan said that a year ago, when he was leaving home, noticed the sketchbooks on the table. He packed all of them before stepping out for good.
“There was a time I really felt, " What am I even doing?" I have never been confident about my art. I have no proper memory of when drawing came into my life. But the view of people stopping by and the joy they feel because of my art. The fact that I can do that, gives me strength.” They said the street selling experience collapsed right after the new government came to power. Now there were limitations applied which were not easy to cope up with.
After many failed attempts to contact the local MLA and police authorities, the two friends are still regularly harassed by the authorities. Ishaan said that since they belong to the LGBTQ community, the MLA has refused to meet with them.
