Bengaluru: The Electronics City locality in Bengaluru was once known as the land of lakes, a name umpteen constructions, encroachments and setting up of factories in the area took away. Karnataka State Pollution Control board has provided a list of 66 lakes in Bengaluru and other districts.
In a study conducted by the board, it was found that 15 lakes are so polluted that their waters are no longer useful for any domestic purpose. The depleted health of the lakes due to the dumping of toxic wastes without processing has caused this problem to worsen.
According to KSPCB Chairman Dr Shant A Thimmaiah,”Identified lakes have been put under categories D and E for they are not eligible for domestic use and most of these lakes will be rejuvenated.
Officials from the KSPCB will monitor these lakes and training will be provided to prevent lake pollution activities. Notices addressing the issue have been sent to industries in the vicinity for non-compliance of environmental norms, which would result in the eventual closure of polluting industries.”
The following lakes are adversely affected, as per the prepared list: Bellandur Lake, Hulimavu Lake, Kempambudhi Lake, Uttarahalli Lake, Hosakerehalli Lake, Parappana Agrahara Lake, Kasavanahalli Lake, Varthur Lake, Kalena Agrahara Lake, Sarakki Lake, Halasuru Lake (near a temple), Sankey Tank, Puttenahalli Lake, Whitefield Lake and Lalbagh Tank.
