Stamping Out Acid Attacks

Acid attacks, also known as acid violence, are becoming increasingly common around the world. These attacks are often committed by someone who wants to inflict vengeful injury on the victim leading to disfigurement, scarring and even blindness. Acid attacks not only leave negative and everlasting impact on the victim’s psyche, but also on the family and the society as a whole. Most victims of acid attacks are females – from adult women to young girls.

The main reasons for acid attacks on women are denial of relationships with men and refusal of marriage proposal. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan account for most of these barbaric crimes, with India alone witnessing 250-300 reported cases every year. The diabolical motivation for such attack is: ‘If I am rejected, I will make the entire society reject you’. The physical and psychological effects of acid attacks on individuals are severe and long-lasting. Acid can cause severe burns that can penetrate through the skin, muscles and even bones.

Victims often experience intense pain, inflammation and permanent scarring, which can lead to disfigurement and a loss of confidence. Acid attacks can also cause blindness, hearing loss and other physical disabilities, depriving the victim of prospect of earning a livelihood, and thereby subjecting her to dependence on others. Besides, victims of acid attacks often face psychological trauma, such as depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. They may feel ashamed, stigmatised and isolated, leading to a decline in their mental health and quality of life.

Furthermore, acid attacks have a profound impact on society. These attacks cause fear and panic in communities, and the widespread media coverage of such crimes often triggers outrage and fear. Acid attacks have a ripple effect on families, friends and society, leading to a loss of trust. It also results in many women losing their freedom, for they are forced to stay at home out of fear of becoming the next victim.

Moreover, the costs of medical treatment, rehabilitation and psychological support are enormous, leading to an economic burden on individuals and most families of victims of the heinous crime being unable to afford the treatment, leading to further or more permanent impairment of the victims’ lives. Additionally, acid attacks are often underreported, and the perpetrators often go unpunished, or face minimal consequences due to the lack of accountability. To control and prevent acid attacks, several strategies have been proposed. First among these is to strengthen laws and policies related to acid attacks. Governments should ensure that perpetrators of such crimes are punished severely and promptly.

Law enforcement agencies should also be trained to handle such cases sensitively and effectively, including gathering evidence and ensuring the safety of victims and witnesses. Besides, governments should regulate the sale and use of acid, such as banning the sale of acid to minors, limiting the amount that can be purchased and tracking the sale of acid. Another critical strategy is to raise awareness about acid attacks and their devastating effects.

It should further include measures to be adopted by the government, civil society and the media to educate people about the risks and consequences of acid attacks. This can include campaigns on social media, public service announcements and community-based interventions. Moreover, victims of acid attacks should be given access to medical treatment, rehabilitation and psychological support. This can help them recover and rebuild their lives, as also contribute to reducing the stigma associated with acid attacks.
