Bellandur traffic police urges BBMP to clear silt from rajakaluves

Bengaluru: For a few years now, water-logged roads and streets following heavy rains are a common sight here.

Reasons for water-logging in most areas of the city have been attributed to garbage and silt accumulating in the already reduced number of rajakaluves that have survived encroachments. Often it has been observed that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike begins desilting storm-water drains (SWD) only during or after the rains.

Considering this, the Bellandur traffic police have written to the civic agency to clear the silt ahead of monsoon this year. The traffic police had a difficult time clearing traffic congestions magnified due to water-logged roads in many parts of the city last year.

To prevent the recurrence of a similar situation this year, the traffic officials have alerted the BBMP requesting them to start removing blockages from SWDs and rajakaluves in all areas including Mahadevapura, Bellandur, Marathahalli and Whitefield, which are prone to severe water-logging during rains.

Reacting to the request, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath said that the BBMP has finalised the tender for a drive and will soon issue directions for the clearance of silt and dirt from SWDs and rajakaluves in the city before the rainy season begins.
