Bengaluru: The Girinagar police have arrested a man for allegedly duping a city jeweller by selling him a fake gold nugget for Rs 13 lakh.
The accused has been identified as Gunji Shivashankar Rao, 39, a native of Palnadu district in Andhra Pradesh. The police said the accused had used metal pieces with a little bit of gold at the ends for his con act. He would approach gullible people with a cookedup story that he found the gold bar while digging land to construct a house.
The man would then scratch that part of the bar with a golden hue in front of his prospective client, saying they could get it tested, and he would then propose to sell the remaining part at a "cheap price" as he is in urgent need of money.
Following the modus operandi, the accused had duped a jeweller by selling a nugget in exchange for Rs 13 lakh from him and fled. He was later arrested based on a complaint filed by the jeweller, police said. The police have recovered Rs 8 lakh, a hammer, a chopper and a motorcycle from the accused, who is being further interrogated in the matter.
