BBMP calls tenders to clear flex banners in city

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), whose job is to keep the city clean by keeping flex banners off its streets, has said that it is finding it difficult to clear flex banners put up across the city. With Assembly elections fast approaching, a lot of publicity material has been put up over the last few days with political parties holding rallies and meetings.

Residents and activists have been complaining that some of the banners are so big that they endanger the lives of motorists as well as pedestrians. While the sitting and aspiring MLAs have put up illegal flex boards and banners on almost all roads and footpaths in the city, the BBMP seems to be feeling too timid to act against political leaders.

The Civic body had vowed to invoke the Karnataka Open Spaces (Disfigurement of Public Spaces) Act to prosecute firms and individuals who put up illegal flexes. Earlier, a senior BBMP official said that while they had so far focused on removing these illegal flexes, they would soon start filing police complaints against violators in large numbers.
