Bengaluru: The city police has informed the public that the emerg ency helpline number, Namma 112 or Dial 112, is under maintenance due to a technical issue. Meanwhile, the department has provided an alternate number to which citizens can alert cops in an emergency. On Sunday, Bengaluru Police took to social media to share the new helpline number while the issues with the Namma 112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) were being resolved.
"Due to an unexpected technical error, calls are not landing on 112. In case of an emergency, you can alternatively reach us on 080 2294 3000. We request your cooperation," the Bengaluru police posted on Twitter. Soon after this, several reports claiming that the helpline number has been hacked began circulating on social media following which the Bengaluru police again put out a message clarifying that the helpline system is under maintenance and has not been hacked.
"Please note: BCP's 112 helpline is under maintenance due to a technical error. It has not been hacked. Requesting everyone to restrain from sharing any false info/ unverified news," the post from the city police stated. Namma 112 or Dial 112 is the official toll-free emergency helpline number to reach out to the Bengaluru police and Fire Station services where an assessment team connects the caller to the respective team in charge, and forwards the request to the nearest Hoysala or patrol services for timely help in a situation.
Through this helpline, incidents of crime, violence, accidents, cybercrime, eve teasing, robbery, fire emergencies, or any other suspicious activity in their neighborhood can be brought to the notice of the police. For the time being, citizens may dial 080 2294 3000 to report any emergency to the city police.
