CM Siddaramaiah to review ‘anti-farmer’ laws

NT Correspondent

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday once again dwelt on the topic of repealing the amendments made to certain laws by the previous BJP government, calling the laws in their current state “anti-farmer”. He said he and his cabinet would review the amendments to the Land Reforms Act, the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act and the Cattle Slaughter Act.

The CM disclosed that he had held talks on the issue with various farmer leaders who met him on Wednesday. Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) leaders such as Badagalpura Nagendra, Chamarasa Mali Patil, GS Baiyya Reddy, HR Basavarajappa and others made up the delegation.

The farmer leaders said that small scale farmers “who constitute more than 85 per cent” of agriculturalists would be affected due to the Union Government’s decision to empower the corporate sector in the field.

The CM assured them that he would hold a separate meeting to discuss the policies and regulations vis a vis the farm sector. In the past, as an Opposition leader, Siddaramaiah had gone on record to state that he’d repeal the state’s anti-conversion law.
