Tumakuru: An assistant subinspector (ASI) of police and a head constable attached to the Kallambella Police Station have been placed under suspension and an inquiry ordered after a video of them taking a bribe from a container truck driver was captured on a mobile phone and circulated, on Friday.

The two policemen, identified as ASI Chidananda Swamy and head constable Chikkahanumaiah, had parked their vehicle by the side of National Highway 48 (NH-48) and were, in the video, seen taking Rs 200 from the driver of a container truck transporting sheep from the Chitradurga APMC yard.

When inquired, it was revealed that despite the driver having a tax-paid receipt, the policemen took the bribe from him. The entire incident was captured on a mobile phone by a few locals who took the policemen to task. They even got the ASI and head constable to return the bribe money to the truck driver following which the policemen apologised to the locals who gave them an earful.

After the video went viral, ADGP Traffic and Road Safety Alok Kumar assured to take action against the errant cops. "ASI involved in this episode has been placed under suspension by the SP of Tumakuru district. We will take action against such illegal demand and collection of money by policemen with regard to traffic-related issues," he said.
