PCOS has become a widely known term among schools and households, particularly among adolescent girls.

Its prevalence has grown to such an extent that some parents approach the doc[1]tors saying, "Doctor, can you please check if my daughter has PCOS. Many of her close friends have been diagnosed with it".

Doctors say on a regular basis at clinics, there are numerous women who exhibit symptoms that closely resemble those of PCOS.

"These symptoms can range from increased hair growth and acne to irregular menstrual cycles. It is quite alarming to witness that nearly one in every ten girls I encounter shows such symptoms, which indicates a substantial prevalence of this condition", says Dr Gaana Sreenivas, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Bannerghatta, Bengaluru.

According to him the exact cause of PCOS is still unknown, but it often runs in families. "If your mother or sister has PCOS, you have a higher chance of developing it too. Additionally, our lifestyle choices play a role in this syndrome".

Leading a sedentary life[1]style, spending too much time watching  tv, and consuming unhealthy foods like French fries, pizzas can contribute to its onset. Furthermore, some teenagers may experience hormonal imbalances that worsen the symptoms of PCOS by increasing the production of male hormones.
