Measures to curb accidents on Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway to be implemented

Bengaluru: In an effort to address the high number of accidents and fatalities on the BengaluruMysuru Expressway, the police department is taking measures to enhance road safety. They plan to install speed radar guns and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras along the 119-kilometre highway to enforce the speed limit of 100 km/hr and penalise speeding drivers.
Following a series of fatal accidents on the highway, the additional director general of police (Traffic and Road Safety) personally inspected 18 accident-prone spots. Based on the findings, the police department has decided to leverage technology to reduce accidents.
The ADGP emphasised that speeding and reckless driving are major contributors to accidents on the highway. To address this issue, speed radar guns will be installed in both directions, particularly in Ramanagara and Mandya. Violators exceeding the speed limit will be intercepted at toll plazas and subjected to penalties.
Additionally, in collaboration with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the police department plans to employ ANPR technology to monitor and maintain the speed limit on the highway. According to reports, once toll collection begins on the second stretch of the road, the NHAI intends to prohibit two-wheelers and three-wheelers from accessing the six-lane main highway.
The collection of tolls is set to commence at Ganganguru Toll Plaza on July 10. However, two-wheelers and three-wheelers will still be allowed on the service road. Since its inauguration in March of this year, alarming reports indicate that over 100 individuals have lost their lives in accidents on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway
