Bengaluru: With an inherent emphasis on clinical excellence and keeping up with its commitment to providing world-class medical services to all, Aster CMI Hospital successfully conducted an advanced Vertebral Body Stenting procedure on a 57-year-old female patient.

This Stentoplasty procedure, is a novel vertebral augmentation method for the treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures, where polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement was injected into the fractured vertebral body. The patient had complaints of severe low back pain and life was not easy for her given her limited mobility and dependability.

Upon diagnosis, the patient was known to be on treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis and was already in severe pain. Considering the age-related risk factors, doctors decided on Vertebral body stenting as the best possible procedure. This complex new age surgery involved highly skilled doctors and high-end technology available at the hospital.

“The surgery was minimally invasive and was performed using the latest medical procedure in vertebral augmentation, called vertebral body stenting (Stentoplasty), which gave immediate relief to the patient, who was able to walk in less than 24 hours. Balloon Kyphoplasty prevents the ver tebral body from collapsing and also aids in vertebral body height restoration and shape”, commented Dr Umesh Srikantha, Sr Consultant Neurosurgeon, Head of spine services, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru.

“This procedure took less than an hour and post the surgery, there was a significant improvement in mobility and the patient was comfortably walking without any assistance”, added Dr Srikantha. This complex new age surgery has created a milestone, and the hospital is the first in Southern India to conduct it.
