Bengaluru: In a surprising tIn a surprising turn of events, Union Minister of State for Agriculture Shobha Karandlaje’s bid to become state BJP president is facing opposition due to her close ties with former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.

Reports had suggested that she might replace Nalin Kumar Kateel, the incumbent president, but there are doubts whether she can effectively manage the state unit.

One of the primary concerns pertaining to Karandlaje’s potential presidency is the perceived concentration of power within coastal Karnataka. Both Karandlaje and Kateel hail from this region, raising questions about whether the party should continue with a leader from the same area.

Critics argue that it may be beneficial to diversify the leadership and ensure representation from different regions of the state. Her rise within the party has been undeniably linked to her association with Yediyurappa.

Starting as an ordinary party worker, she climbed the political ladder to become an MLA, minister, MP, and eventually a Union Minister, with Yediyurappa’s support playing a significant role in her ascent.

During Yediyurappa’s tenure as Chief Minister from 2008 to 2010, several ministers had remarked on his tendency to give priority to Karandlaje’s advice over others. However, despite her political achievements, Karandlaje faces notable disadvantages.

Firstly, her communication skills have been criticized, raising doubts about her capacity to effectively convey the party’s message to the masses. Additionally, she has struggled to gain acceptance among senior party leaders, who perceive her as too closely aligned with Yediyurappa, which might limit her ability to garner support.

If Shobha secures the state BJP presidency solely due to Yediyurappa’s influence, she risks alienating other party members and potential allies. Many believe that she cannot lead effectively without the constant guidance and support of her mentor.

This dependency raises questions about her independent decision-making capabilities and leadership style, which may impact the party’s ability to improve ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

While her proximity to Yediyurappa has undoubtedly propelled her to higher positions within the party, it has also raised doubts among party members who yearn for fresh leadership and broader representation.

She also faces a significant challenge in building the party ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha polls.
