Bengaluru: The police have cracked a case of robbery in Basaweshwara Nagar police station limits within a day and arrested six people in this connection on Monday.

The accused were part of an eight-member gang, including four women, which had committed robbery at a house in VHBCS Layout near Shankara Mutt on Sunday.

The victims are Anu Jeshwani, who sells cosmetics and clothes for a living, and Jagadish, a cosmetics dealer. On Sunday, Anu had placed an order for some cosmetic items with Jagadish, and told him to deliver them at her house. Anu also received a call from her friend, identified as Sujatha, a resident of Kengeri, that she would be sending a woman named Deepa to purchase clothes.

When Anu and Jagadish were at home, Deepa arrived. Anu later came out of the house to buy flowers and happened to see three unidentified women near the gate. They claimed they were looking for houses on rent in the vicinity.

“When Anu entered the house to get the keys of a nearby vacant house, the three women forcibly entered the house along with four men. They forced Jagadish to strip and made him sit next to Deepa, while they shot a video. The gang demanded Rs 5 lakh from him. Later they took away gold and cash from Anu’s house, totally worth around Rs 9.59 lakh,” said a police officer.

The gang took Deepa with them and locked both Anu and Jagadish in the house. She later managed to open the door and alert the neighbours, who called the police.

Anu also filed a complaint against Deepa and the seven others including the three unidentified women. The Basaweshwara Nagar police had registered a case of dacoity under section 395 of the Indian Penal code.

Within a day, the police arrested six of the accused and recovered Rs 63,000 in cash and 152.5 grams of gold ornaments. Efforts are on to arrest the remaining gang members. The police are also checking if Anu’s friend Sujatha had any role in the robbery.
