Safe city project gaining momentum in Namma B'luru

Bengaluru: In a bid to enhance the safety measures, a total of 4,100 CCTV cameras have been installed across the city under the phase 1 of the Bengaluru safe city project, the police department on Thursday announced.
According to Bengaluru police, 1,400 locations in the city are equipped with 4,100 CCTV cameras which will be functional round the clock.
Another 3,400 additional cameras will be installed in remaining locations during the second phase of the safe city project. The cameras are expected to bring high standards of safety, especially for women and children in the city.
The recently installed safety islands are also part of phase 1 of the project. The safety islands are the telephone booth-like structures in blue colour which were recently installed at different junctions in Bengaluru.
The boxes come with a panic button, which when pressed during emergency situations, raises a direct alert to the command centre in the commissionerate’s office. The local police are then directed to attend to the issue.
As per the city police, there are 30 operational safety islands in the city as of now.
Meanwhile the safe city project is being implemented in many cities across the country under the ‘Nirbhaya scheme ’ , created in the aftermath of a horrifying rape incident in New Delhi in 2016.
