Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday made surprise visits to Indira Canteens, telling mediapersons that he wasn’t happy with the way the eateries were functioning, adding that the same would be rectified.

“Today, I visited Indira Canteens. I saw (some) Indira Canteens were not functioning. They had been closed. In other places, where Rs5 had to be collected for breakfast, they had been collecting Rs 10. All (phone) numbers had not been working,” Shivakumar told reporters.

“I’m not happy with the process that is going on. I will rectify it,” he added.

The Deputy CM insisted that the prices of items on the Indira Canteen were too high and not in keeping with what had been fixed in the eateries. Shivakumar also visited the Seegehalli solid waste management plant in the Yesvantpur locality of Bengaluru city.

“I have also been visiting the solid waste management plant where they have not started the power. First, I’ll check with government (authorities) to find out what has been invested. Then, I’ll go to see the landfilling prices in the coming days,” the Deputy CM said.

Later on he visited the Kannalli solid waste to energy plant and another similar facility in Doddabidarakallu.

In the Kannalli plant, he noted that there had been a discrepancy in the number of garbage vehicles that had been signed in and the number that had been let in.

He also took stock of the energy that was being produced at the facilities. When in the Opposition, Congress had made it a point to cry loud that the BJP government had mismanaged Bengaluru’s infrastructure and had starved Indira Canteens of funds.

In the Budget presented on Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had set aside Rs 45,000 crores for the ‘Brand Bengaluru’ initiative.
