Cops to go strict on rash, negligent drivers

Bengaluru: A major mishap was averted on the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway on Wednesday afternoon when a 12-wheeler container truck jumped the median, crossed the opposite lane and came to a halt on the service road after crashing through the safety metal fencing near a large signboard on the road.

A video of the incident shared on Twitter shows a speeding container truck going out of control and jumping over the median, cutting across the opposite lane, tearing down the fence before coming to a halt by hitting the trusses of the signboard.

According to sources, the incident occurred around 1 pm on Wednesday near Sankalagere Gate in Channapatna taluk and was captured on CCTV camera.

Luckily, there were no vehicles moving on the expressway at that time. Taking to his Twitter handle, Additional Director General of Police, (Traffic and Road Safety) Alok Kumar commented on the video saying, "Such reckless and dangerous driving on Expressway. Stringent action, including cancellation of licence will be taken against the driver."

Meanwhile, a Twitter user shared a dash-cam video of an autorickshaw cutting across the expressway on the wrong side and tagged ADGP Alok Kumar and the Ramanagara Superintendent of Police.

"Such drivers are a danger to the other road users. We will recommend ca ncellation of licences. Concerned jurisdictional police are taking appropriate measures to curb such violations and reduce accidents," the ADGP replied to the post.

The expressway has witnessed several accidents since its inauguration and as per the reports, 100 people have been killed and 335 injured till June 30 on the highway.
