Chip-enabled e-passport to be tested in Bengaluru
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: The Indian government is all set to put on trial the chip-enabled e-passport in Bengaluru. The new passport will be equipped with a microchip that will store the passport holder's personal information, including their photograph, fingerprints and signature.
The chip-enabled e-passport is expected to reduce the time it takes to issue a passport by half. Currently, it takes about four to five working days to get a passport.
With the new passport, it will take just two to three days. The chip-enabled e-passport will also make it more difficult to forge or counterfeit passports. The microchip will be difficult to replicate, and it will contain security features that will make it easy to verify the authenticity of the passport.
The trial of the chipenabled e-passport will be conducted in two passport service centres in Bangalore. If the trial is successful, the new passport will be rolled out across India.
The chip-enabled e-passport is a welcome development for travellers. It will make it easier and faster to get a passport, and it will make passports more secure. It will make it easier to travel internationally, as the chip can be read by passport control systems in other countries.
