Mangaluru: Following tension in Uppinangady after a protest by Popular Front of India (PFI) activists, section 144 has been imposed in four taluks of Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday.
The activists had protested in front of Uppinangady police station on Tuesday demanding the release of three activists. The protest continued till the night with the protesters shouting slogans against the police who requested them to disperse claiming section 144 had been imposed in Puttur taluk limits. As their order went in vain, they resorted to a lathi charge against the protesters who also pelted stones at the cops leading to tension in the area.
With police suspecting further violence by the activists with a message circulating in social media about a huge protest by PFI activists, Puttur Assistant Commissioner Dr Yathish Ullal imposed section 144 on Puttur subdivision, Sullia, Belthangady and Kadaba taluk limits from Dec. 15 to Dec. 17. Due to this, public programmes, gathering in huge numbers and carrying weapons are prohibited.
It may be noted that a person named Mohammed Sinan was arrested on charges of attempt to murder.
