Free eye care camp in Mysuru illuminates lives, sparks awareness

Mysuru: Mohammed Arfath Shafi, a man driven by his love for social service, recently organised a one-day free medical check-up and eye screening camp in Mysuru.
The camp, held on July 10, shed light on the neglect of eye care. For many individuals, particularly those who struggle financially, access to basic eye care is a luxury they simply cannot afford.
Recognising this need, Afrath Shafi decided to take action and make a difference where it mattered most.
At the free medical camp, over 40 patients received free cataract surgery. Furthermore, over 150 prescription spectacles were given to those in need. Talking about the cataract surgeries, he said, “Cataract is something that most people are affected with after the age of 50 and most people are not aware of this, especially for people from poor and illiterate backgrounds.”
Afrath Shafi's initiative not only provided essential medical services but also raised awareness about the importance of eye care within the community. By organising this event, he emphasised that neglecting one's eyesight can have far-reaching consequences on both personal well-being and economic opportunities.
He shared with the News Trail correspondent that people often ignore eye care even though they use their eyes 24/7. Going forward, Afrath Shafi aims to bring better eye care and share his political aspirations.
He said, “Without any power, if I am able to change the lives of these many people, if I had the opportunity to be a bridge between the government and the public, my social service can reach more people.”
