Denied bride, man axes 850 arecanut trees

Bengaluru: This will definitely leave eco-activists infuriated. A youth axed over 850 arecanut trees after a man refused to marry off his daughter with the former in Mellanahalli village of Hunsur taluk in Mysuru district.

According to information available, the father of the girl, Venkatesh had planted around 900 arecanut saplings on his plot. Initialy he had considered marrying off his daughter to Ashok, a resident of the same village.

Later, when Venkatesh came to know about the bad habits of his prospective son-in-law, he rejected the idea.

Agitated over this, Ashok cut the 850 arecanut plants after dark recently even while feigning ignorance about the incident.

A shocked Venkatesh after seeing the chopped saplings, informed the police who grew suspicion about Ashok and took him into custody. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

The police have booked a case and are investigating.
