Bengaluru: The Jigani police on Friday shot at a rape and murder accused when he allegedly attempted to flee from the spot during mahazar by attacking a police constable.

An officer from the Jigani Police Station told News Trail that a police team had taken Soma alias Somashekar to the spot where he and two others had gang-raped and murdered a woman near the Hakki Pikki Colony close to Bannerghatta.

The police were inspecting the spot when Somashekar allegedly attacked a constable, Madappa, in a bid to flee.

Police inspector Manjunath fired a few warning shots in the air and when Somashekar did not relent, the officer shot him in the leg, Bengaluru Rural SP Mallikarjun Baladandi said on Friday evening.

The injured Soma was later shifted to Narayana Health City hospital. The constable, who suffered loss of blood due to the attack, was also taken to the hospital.

Last Saturday, a complaint was filed at the Jigani Police Station by a few locals after a 39-yearold woman and her child went missing. Probing the incident, the police recovered the woman's body and from an isolated place and found that she was raped.

Further investigation led to the arrest of three accused identified as Somashekar, Harish and Jayanth. SP Baladandi said that it was revealed that the accused were under the influence of drugs when they committed the crime.
