Whispers of departure: ‘Bombay Boys’ hint at BJP exodus to embrace Congress

Bengaluru: The allure of reuniting with the Congress Party seems to be growing for some of the ‘Bombay Boys’, as former ministers and current BJP MLAs ST Somashekar and Shivaram Hebbar made statements that hint at their potential departure from the saffron party.
Somashekar’s recent statements in support of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and the Congress government subtly defended the ruling party against the BJP’s criticism, advocating for more time to be given to them.
This move, in itself, indicates a rift between the legislator and his party. Hebbar’s complaints against the BJP’s high command for not heeding their suggestions appear to be the initial signs of his ‘ghar wapsi’.
This could escalate to critiquing the party’s atmosphere, alleged communal politics, and leadership dynamics.
If these trends continue, it is likely that he, along with Somashekar, may bid farewell to the BJP and embrace the Congress party. Insider information suggests that both Somashekar and Hebbar are engaged in discussions with Shivakumar to pave the way for their return to the Congress Party.
Once they receive the green light, their departure from the BJP could be imminent. The hushed tones of dissent from others in the party may amplify in the days to come, depending on the reception they anticipate within the Congress Party.
While Gopalaiah and Muniratna have publicly denied plans to leave the BJP, Byrati Basavaraj and BC Patil has maintained silence.
Another leader, BJP MLC AH Vishwanath has informally joined the Congress Party after being denied the minister post by the previous BJP Government.
Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy’s assertion that a dozen BJP and JD(S) leaders are set to join the Congress Party before the Lok Sabha polls has sent shockwaves through the BJP.
Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar’s open announcement of “Operation Hastha,” aimed at enticing BJP and JDS leaders prior to the parliamentary elections, hints at a potential reconfiguration of political allegiances.
The days ahead will reveal the extent of the operation’s impact, as party lines blur and it is expected to be clear in the coming days.
