Mysuru: The Covid 19 pandemic has led to an increase in love affairs among girls below 18 years, resulting in a rise in secret child marriages and cheating after sexual abuse. The fear of this kind of abuse of children among parents coupled with their financial crisis and other reasons due to Covid too has led to a drastic increase in the number of child marriages in the state including Mysuru in the past two years, according to Chairperson of Mysuru Child Welfare Committee, Ms Kamala H.T.

Speaking to News Trail, Ms Kamala said, “90 percent of the child marriage cases we are receiving at the CWC in Mysuru these days are related to love affairs among high school children which would have resulted in cheating after a secret marriage and sexual abuse. With schools remaining closed for long due to Covid, online classes have given children access to smart phones and social media. And this along with more free time for children, has led to an increase in love affairs. Due to fear of this kind of abuse of children, or to prevent girls from marrying boys of their choice, most parents are ending up in getting girls married early these days,” she said.
