Bengaluru: In a swift action, the city police arrested a man who had absconded to Kashmir after cheating a 38-year-old woman with a fake promise of marrying her.
The accused was identified as Mozif Baig, 32, a native of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. A special team of officials based on information from Hebbagodi Police Station in Bengaluru arrested the accused from Srinagar and brought him to the city for questioning.
Speaking to News Trail, sources from the police said that it was an incident from 2018 and the woman decided to complain now. Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru Rural, Mallikarjuna Baldandi said that the accused has been arrested based on the complaint by the woman.
The woman had initially filed a complaint at Bellandur Police Station which was later transferred to Hebbagodi police.
"The accused and the woman were in a live-in relationship till 2018 after which the accused went back to Kashmir and started neglecting her. He wanted to marry a woman from his city. We are in the process of questioning and further probe is still underway," he said.
An FIR was filed after the complainant had alleged that Baig who was employed at a private firm in Bengaluru a few years ago had initiated a relationship with the woman promising marriage and coerced her into a physical relationship at a rented house here.
The woman alleged that in January 2018, the accused attempted to convert her to a different faith by promising to marry her.
However, when they began the relationship, he had assured her they would get married in court without any religious customs, she said.
