Bengaluru: A civil engineer died on the spot after he was knocked down and run over by a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus in Yelahanka on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was identified by the police as Bharat Reddy, 24. According to an eye-witness, Reddy fell towards the road median before he was run over by the bus.

Sources said that the young man was on his way home on his scooter when a BMTC bus ahead of him was blocking the entire width of the road.

After trailing the bus for some distance, Bharat tried to overtake it near D-Mart, when he was allegedly knocked down and came under the wheels of the bus. Following the incident, the driver of the bus abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene even as passers-by and residents surrounded the bus.

The Yelahanka traffic police have registered a case and taken up further investigation. Bharat’s father is said to be an established civil engineer himself and was sending his son to train under another engineer known to him.

The accident occurred when Bharat was returning home from work.
