Fifth Finance Commission members named

Bengaluru: Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has confirmed the appointment of the state’s Fifth Finance Commission (FC), a threemember body.

Former Bengaluru North MP C Narayanaswamy has been named as the chairman of the commission. Retired Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer Mohamed Sanaulla and RS Phonde, also a retired officer, are the remaining two members.

The commission will be mainly concerned with the financial position of local bodies, taxation that would be levied on them, besides grants that should be allocated. The body is expected to submit their report by February 28 of next year.

“The Commission shall review the financial position of the Zilla Panchayats, Taluk Panchayats, Grama Panchayats, Municipal Corporations, City Municipal Councils, Town Municipal Councils and Town Panchayats and make recommendations,” Gehlot said.

“The distribution between the State Government and Zilla Panchayats, Taluk Panchayats, Grama Panchayats, Municipal Corporations, City Municipal Councils, Town Municipal Councils and Town Panchayats of the net proceeds of the taxes, duties, tolls and fees leviable by the Government which may be divided between them and allocation between Zilla Panchayats, Taluk Panchayats, Grama Panchayats, Municipal Corporations, City Municipal Councils, Town Municipal Councils and Town Panchayats to their respective shares of such proceeds,” he added.
