Bengaluru: In a case of alleged honour killing, a man murdered his 20-yearold daughter by slitting her throat and smashing her head while she was asleep, at Bidalur village in Devanahalli taluk of Bengaluru Rural district on Wednesday night.
The accused then surrendered himself to the jurisdictional police, sources told News Trail on Thursday. The accused was identified as Manjunath, 47, who runs a chicken shop, was angry that his daughter Kavana was in love with a youth belonging to a different caste.
After murdering her, he walked 5 km and surrendered before the police. Kavana was working at an Amazon delivery store, they further added. Manjunath had three daughters and a son.
He had married off his eldest daughter while the second daughter Kavana was in love with a youth belonging to another caste. Only a couple of days ago, his youngest daughter, a minor, had eloped with her boyfriend.
But since she is a minor, the police have put her up in a rescue centre. Manjunath, who was angry with all this, had an argument with Kavana and allegedly told her not to bring disrepute to him and the family, but she said she wanted to lead her own life.
The father-daughter duo had a major argument over this and later Manjunath killed her while she was asleep, police said.
Following the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police Purushotham and other senior officials visited the spot.
"Manjunath was angry that two of his daughters were in love with youths from different castes. He first hit Kavana with a stick when she was asleep and then slit her throat. A case of murder has been registered at the Vishwanathapura police station against the accused", the officer said.
Honour killings have been reported in the districts, including Mandya, Kolar, Tumakuru and parts of North Karnataka previously.
From October 2022 until now, at least seven horrendous cases have been reported in the state so far excluding this particular incident in Devanahalli.
