New Delhi: Despite the deteriorating diplomatic relations between India and Canada, statistics reveal that Indians constitute the largest group acquiring Canadian citizenship.

According to the 2023 International Migration Outlook report, Canada, among the member nations of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, welcomed a record 375,000 new citizens in 2022.

Notably, the highest number of individuals obtaining Canadian citizenship in 2022 originated from India (60,000), with the Philippines (42,000), Syria (20,000), and Pakistan (15,000) following suit.

In 2021, India also took the lead as the primary source country for new citizens in OECD countries.

A total of 133,000 Indians acquired citizenship in OECD countries, with the US(56,000), Australia (24,000), and Canada (21,000) top destinations. The data indicates that migration figures returned to pre-Covid levels in 2021, with the exception of China.
