Fresh quake in Chikkaballapura creates panic

Bengaluru: Even as residents of several villages in Chikkaballapura are yet to recover from the twin tremors which rocked the district on Wednesday, a fresh earthquake of 3.6 magnitude on the Richter scale struck a few villages in the district again Thursday afternoon.
This has come as a big shock as people have experienced a total of three jolts in the last 24 hours. According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the epicentre of Thursday’s earthquake was 1.2 km south-east of Sadenahalli village, Gollahalli gram panchayat in Chikkaballapur taluk and it was felt around 2.16 pm. The jolt was experienced by people of Beeraganahalli village, Settigerre, Bayyapanahalli, Paresandra, Bandahalli and surrounding places. The
KSNDMC Director said that the intensity observed is moderate and the tremor might be felt up to a maximum radial distance of 20-30 km from the epicenter. This type of earthquake does not create any harm to the local community, although there may be slight shaking locally. The possibility of damages due to the earthquake is also less. People need not panic as the intensity observed is moderate and not destructive, he added.
It may be mentioned here that several villages in Chikkaballapur recorded two earthquakes measuring 2.9 and 3 magnitude on Wednesday. The local population want the government to engage experts to find the reason for this.
