Bengaluru: Two people including a 28-year-old pregnant woman were killed on the spot when a speeding truck ran over them while they were crossing the Hosur Road near Hebbagodi Police Station limits on Thursday.
The police identified the deceased as P Rukhiya, 28, a native of Madanpalli, Andhra Pradesh and Lakshmamma, 50, a resident of Varthur in Bengaluru.
According to the police, the incident took place around 11 am when Rukhiya, a seven-months pregnant woman was crossing the road along with her family friend Lakshmamma to reach Narayana Hrudayalaya on Thursday.
Another woman who was accompanying them had a narrow escape, said the police.
"The trio got down at the bus stop and was crossing the highway by passing through a gap between the barricade close to the hospital on Hosur Road. A speeding truck knocked them down," said the police.
The woman who escaped the accident filed a complaint with the jurisdictional police. The driver was arrested following an inquiry and the police charged him with death due to negligence and rash and negligent driving.
The police said though there is a skywalk, very few people prefer to use it and a majority of them cross the road at their own risk.
“This is because a majority of the road users are women and patients who cannot afford to climb the stairs of the skywalk,” a police officer said.
