Extend voter registration period for Council seats, BJP tells EC

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Karnataka BJP on Saturday demanded that voter registration for Council seats namely Teachers and Graduates be extended by a month.

The saffron party delegation led by Malleshwaram MLA and former minister CN Ashwath Narayan submitted a written request to the Election Commission (EC) demanding the same.

As it currently stands, the voter registration period was between September 30 to November 6. Narayan argued that the same be extended by a month to December 6 because September, October and November witnessed many holidays, which didn’t give the voters enough time to register.

It is to be noted that MLCs are not elected directly by the people like MLAs. The constituencies in question are made up of electorates of teachers and graduates respectively. Some MLCs are nominated by the governor over distinction in separate fields.

A third of Council seats are elected by state MLAs and another third by local government members.
