From 83rd in 2013, India's talent competitiveness ranking plummets to 103rd in 2023: Report

Bengaluru: In the latest iteration of The Global Talent Competitiveness Index, India's talent competitiveness ranking has witnessed a disheartening decline, plummeting from 83rd place out of 103 countries in 2013 to a sobering 103rd out of 134 countries in 2023.
This revelation stems from the comprehensive report published by the esteemed business school, INSEAD. Strikingly, within the BRICS consortium (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), India finds itself anchored at the bottom of the talent competitiveness hierarchy.
The index serves as an annual benchmarking report, measuring how countries foster, attract, and retain talent.
"Talent competitiveness," as defined by the report, encompasses a spectrum of policies and practices that empower a country to cultivate and mobilise human capital, thereby contributing to overall productivity and prosperity.
This evaluative index consists of two pivotal subindices: input and output. The input framework scrutinises regulatory and business environments, as well as a country's initiatives to allure, nurture, and retain talent.
On the other hand, the output framework assesses the quality of talent within a given nation.
The disconcerting findings of this year's report underscore a noteworthy deterioration in India's long-term trends regarding talent competitiveness.
An insightful retrospective analysis covering the two halves of the past decade (2013-2018 and 2019-2023) reveals India's slip from the 88th position to the 89th.
The report attributes India's decline in rankings to a palpable slump in business sentiment, casting a shadow on its ability to attract talent—both domestically and internationally— over the past three years.
