Bengaluru: In a move to promote millet-based food consumption, Gandhi Krishi Vijnana Kendra (GKVK) is set to host the annual Krishi Mela, starting Friday.

The Mela will revolve around the theme of 'Millet for Food, Health, and Income.'

This event is jointly organised by the University of Agricultural Sciences and the state departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Silk, Forest, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, and Women and Child Welfare.

The event will feature the unveiling of five new varieties of ragi, white millet, little millet, sunflower, and jackfruit. The best farmers will be recognised and awarded during this event.

Attendees, who can enter the event for free, will have the opportunity to explore a millet food fair with 625 exhibitions and diverse menus on the cards.

The event aims to educate farmers on cultivating crops resilient to drought conditions. Demonstrations of drip and spray irrigation systems, rain harvesting systems, and other far ming technologies will be presented to the gathering.

Stores related to animal husbandry, farming implementations, and agriculture development will also be part of the event. Moreover, attendees will have the chance to savour dishes prepared with millets. Approximately 40 dishes will be showcased and available for purchase at discounted prices.

This Mela, scheduled to continue until November 20, will also feature presentations on various sheep varieties. Names such as Darper, Rambullet, Bannuru, Elaga, Sanan, and Bangalore Long Goat are among those expected to be on display.

Additionally, stores related to animal husbandry, farming implementations, and agriculture development departments will be present throughout the event.
