Bengaluru: A woman miraculously escaped unhurt after a multi-storeyed building in Kumbarpet accidentally caught fire. While no casualties were reported, valuables including childrens' toys and electronic appliances were destroyed after a massive fire broke out here on Sunday afternoon.

Due to the narrow lanes even the fire crew had difficulties reaching the spot and dousing the fire. According to sources, more than 70 personnel were pressed into service following the reports of fire.

During the operation, the personnel and the neighbours rescued a woman named Kavita, who was stuck on the terrace of the building. She said she was alone in the house when she detected smoke emanating.

"I came out and saw that the fire had spread and I could not come down. Locals saw me in the building and started screaming. Soon, a few neighbours got a ladder and with the help of a rope made out of clothes, I managed to climb down the building,” Kavita said.

Kavita’s husband worked at one of the shops in the building. Along with the shops and godown, Kavita claimed that her house was gutted in the fire. The cause of the fire was suspected to be a short-circuit in the electrical system of the building.
