Deteriorating road conditions near Cantonment spark concerns among commuters
NT Correspondent
Bengaluru: The primary thoroughfare from Cantonment Railway Kelasetuve, extending through Jayamahal Road to Mekhri Circle in Bengaluru, has raised alarms due to its deteriorating state.
Despite the initiation of the 2.3 km road and footpath development project in 2020-21, with a budget of Rs 52.81 crore allocated, the completion remains pending, causing inconvenience and jeopardising commuters' safety.
The sluggish progress has led to torn tar roads, scattered potholes, and challenges for motorists navigating the uneven terrain.
Daily accidents, particularly during rains with waterlogging near the Cantonment railway station underpass, amplify risks for riders. The absence of street lights on Jayamahal and Bellary roads compounds dangers, making nighttime travel perilous.
Motorists grapple with poorly maintained roads and a lack of dividers, contributing to accidents. Frustrated residents and commuters question authorities' neglect of critical infrastructure, despite the route's significance and proximity to ministerial residences.
Traffic police cite challenges posed by heavy vehicle traffic, asphalt tearing, obstructive manholes, and poorly placed humps.
Despite the installation of temporary barricades, they prove ineffective, exacerbating accidents.
In response to concerns, a BBMP engineer assures the completion of development work on Jayamahal and Bellary roads within a few days, with roads reopening for public traffic, aiming to alleviate the ongoing distress for commuters and residents.
