Bengaluru: In a move to improve multi modal transport to tourist destinations, the Bengaluru Division of South Western Railways (SWR) announced on Tuesday that MEMU (Mainline electric multiple units) trains running from different terminuses of Bengaluru to Devenahalli will be extended to Chikkaballapura, with effect from Monday, December 11.

These trains will also halt at popular weekend destination Nandi Hills, which is 60km from the city, subject to restoration work. Reportedly, a senior railway official has promised a stop at Nandi halt before sunrise, to provide commuters a lovely view.

At present, only six trains ply from Bengaluru Cantonment, Krantivira Sayolli Rayanna (KSR) Bengaluru City and Yeshwantpur, on a daily basis.

The line between Bengaluru and Chikkaballapura holds historical significance, as it is the first railway line to be constructed on a private-public partnership under Sir M Visvesvaraya’s stint as Diwan of Mysuru.
