Increase in number of road accidents in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: An analysis of the number of accidents on city roads show that the mishaps have increased drastically in 2023 compared to earlier years.

According to the data by the Bengaluru Traffic Department, as many as 823 people were killed in 793 fatal accidents that occurred in Bengaluru this year.

The city had an average of 14 accidents per day in 2023 till November compared to the average of 9 accidents per day in 2022. As many as 3,802 people suffered injuries in 3,705 non-fatal accidents.

A total of 4,499 accident cases were registered at different police stations across Bengaluru. Along with the huge number of vehicles being added to the city roads each year, overspeeding also remains a major reason behind the increase in accident numbers.

According to the data, 771 people were killed in 751 road accidents in 2022. As many as 3,218 people suffered injuries in nonfatal accidents.

A total of 3,218 accident cases were reported in 2022.

Most cases booked using AI cameras

An average of 10,000 to 12,000 traffic violation cases are being registered in Bengaluru Traffic Police Stations each day.

Most of these traffic violation cases were registered using Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras. Violation cases reportedly increased after the traffic police started booking the cases using AI technology.

According to reports, Bengaluru books over 96% per cent of traffic violation cases using AI cameras.

Around 250 AI-enabled number plate detection cameras (ANPR) and 80 red light violation cameras are installed in major junctions across the city.
