Traffic violators beware! AI cameras watching you
NT Correspondent
Bengaluru: The traffic police booked the owner of a scooter for allegedly violating rules a whopping 643 times in the city.
According to the police, the offences included riding without a helmet and jumping traffic signals, showcasing the ignorance of road safety norms.
While the traffic cops have stopped flagging down vehicles plying on the road here, there are many motorists who continue to break traffic rules unaware that the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), Artificial Intelligence (AI) or the high quality cameras installed across the city are constantly recording their violations.
The vehicle belonged to a woman identified as Mala, who was served a challan with a penalty of Rs 3.22 lakh significantly surpassing the vehicle's value.
Another vehicle belonging to a daily wage labourer, Elumalai, was caught by the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP). It was learnt that he had more than 50 traffic violation cases and was unaware of the presence of the cameras.
The action serves as a stern reminder that technology-driven surveillance is a formidable tool in curbing traffic violations.
In 2022, the traffic police booked over 96.2 lakh cases out of 1.04 crore violation cases in the city using AI cameras. Around 250 AI-enabled Automatic Number Plate Recognition (APNR) cameras and 80 Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras are installed in 50 major junctions of Bengaluru.
