Pregnant woman dies, child critical after inhaling toxic gas from geyser
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: A 23-year-old pregnant woman died of suffocation while her fouryear-old son is under treatment after they inhaled toxic gas that leaked from a geyser at their house in Ashwath Nagar here.
The police identified the deceased as Ramya. According to sources, the incident took place on Saturday when Ramya took her son for a bath.
The matter came to light when the family members tried to check on them and got no response. The police said that the family knocked down the door and found the mother-son unconscious in a corner.
They were immediately rushed to a hospital where the woman died without responding to the treatment. The child, however, survived but according to the sources, his health is still critical.
The police suspect that the toxic carbon monoxide that leaked from the geyser was the cause for the unfortunate incident as the bathroom had no adequate ventilation.
A case has been registered at Sadashivanagar Police Station and further probe is being conducted by the cops.
Gas geysers known to emit carbon monoxide which can be dangerous as within only a few minutes of inhaling, it can make one dizzy and unconscious.
The doctors recommend bathing in a well-ventilated bathroom with at least one window if using a gas geyser.
